Abstract

A mechanism which seems to be among the most natural and most effective sources of decoherence in the macroscopic world was investigated. From the controlled suppression of quantum interference as a function of the gas pressure, the predictions of decoherence theory and the picture of the collisional interaction were tested. It was found that they were in very good quantitative agreement with decoherence theory.
